I have a story, by the Old Man

I have a story, by the Old Man
I’ve had the privilege of witnessing wild horses in my desert years, and each encounter has been an honor.

This mustang, known as the old man, is a wild onaqui. Imperfect, he captured my attention in a way that nothing else could. As I began painting him, I fell in love with him so deeply that I could feel his soul beating my heart. My brushstrokes followed his struggles and strengths, reflecting a profound empathy for both of us. We shared a deep connection, loving our desert home but also being fearful of its consequences.

This painting began and ended with a sense of quiet sadness. I found myself repeatedly watching the sunset over Death Valley, contemplating the losses that I witnessed, not just my own, but the relentless energy that seemed to point towards blame and conviction. I can’t help but wonder if I’ll ever be able to say goodbye to him. My heart will never let go of the secretive, resilience, and free spirit that embodies the Wild West. A 36”x 36” piece that captures his essence, “ I have a story, by the old man”
