"Dark Horse"

My paintings usually begin ‘on the job’ while working on my family's cattle ranch in central Colorado. The ranch is my truest muse - I'm mesmerised by the beautiful, yet fleeting moments of beauty that make up the ranching lifestyle. I snapped this reference photo during our calf branding in the spring of 2024. The horse, named Night Train, carried himself with such charisma and power I knew I just had to paint him. My favorite detail in this piece is the bold color and texture. They work together to capture the essence of this cool ranch horse.
