The inspiration for this painting was my Percheron mare, Dolly, standing half in, half out of the shadows. I was inspired to accentuate and even exaggerate the warm, bleached browns that often make themselves evident on a black horse in strong sunshine, while using cool blues to suggest the shadow areas.
